In 13 Test matches over the course of a year as captain, Khan had taken 88 wickets by the end of this series in 1982-1983.[22] But during the same Test series with India, he also suffered a stress fracture in his shin, which prevented him from playing cricket for more than two years. By the end of 1984, he had recovered thanks to an experimental procedure supported by the Pakistani government. and he made a successful comeback to international cricket in the latter part of the 1984–1985 season

Khan guided Pakistan to its first-ever Test series victory in India in 1987. That same year, Pakistan also won its first series in England. His team also managed three respectable draws against the West Indies in the 1980s. The 1987 Cricket World Cup was shared by India and Pakistan, although neither team advanced past the semifinals. Khan ended his career in international cricket after the World Cup. General Zia-Ul-Haq, the President of Pakistan, invited him to take over as captain again in 1988, and on January 18, he announced his intention to rejoin the squad. In 1988, he was named Man of the Series against West Indies after taking 23 wickets in 3 Test matches.
