Police say a suspect has been apprehended after stabbing a doctor and two nurses at a Los Angeles hospital.

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — Officials say a guy who allegedly stabbed a doctor and two nurses at an Encino hospital on Friday was taken into custody four hours later after negotiations failed.

The stabbing happened around 3:50 p.m. at Encino Hospital Medical Center, according to authorities. Around 8 p.m., the culprit was apprehended.

After the arrest, Los Angeles Police Department Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton remarked, “We do not believe he was hunting for somebody in particular or targeting a specific individual.”

The man was rushed to the hospital with what seemed to be self-inflicted wounds to his arms, according to Hamilton.

He stated the knife, which was around 3 to 4 inches long, was found.

A representative for Northridge Hospital, where the three patients were transferred, stated Friday night that all three were in stable condition. One of them was in severe condition, according to Hamilton, and was undergoing surgery.

There was no obvious motive. According to Hamilton, the unidentified individual walked into the hospital on his own.

The individual was first confined to a room in the emergency department by police who arrived at the hospital, and SWAT negotiators attempted to negotiate with him, according to Hamilton.

SWAT officers made the arrest after using “specific equipment that they have that limits the movement of a suspect,” according to Hamilton. He wouldn’t say what it was, but he added that it wasn’t a Taser.

The man “appeared as a patient” earlier in the day, according to Hamilton. He was detained by cops in a storage closet, according to Hamilton.

As a precaution, he added, patients and employees were evacuated, and officers were stationed inside the facility to block any potential entrance.

In a statement earlier, Elizabeth Nickels, vice president of communications for the Prime Healthcare hospital system, stated, “Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected.”

The hospital is a 150-bed medical center located in Encino, California’s San Fernando Valley.

According to Hamilton, the individual has had previous encounters with LAPD officers, including arrests in the San Fernando Valley for violence toward a police officer and resisting arrest. He was said to be in his mid-thirties.

The shooting in Southern California happened just days after four people were killed when a shooter opened fire at a hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The gunman, who killed himself, was alleged to be targeting a doctor in that case, according to authorities.
