Sonata is more popular in Pakistan than Elantra.

In July 2021, Hyundai-Nishat debuted the Sonata mid-sized sedan in Pakistan as a CKD locally built vehicle, and the D-category car has done well in terms of sales considering its price and segment.

Sonata outsold its less expensive brother Elantra, which sold 157 units in July 2021, in the first month of sales. According to PAMA sales figures, Sonata sales topped Elantra for the second time in November, with 320 units sold, a 31 percent increase over Elantra’s 244 units.

And, at a time when most models are experiencing a sales slowdown owing to the year-end factor, the Sonata set a new record for the D-segment sedan, selling 320 units, beating its own prior record set in October. Sonata has found 1,071 homes in the first five months of this fiscal year, putting it almost neck and neck with the Elantra, which sold 1,280 units in 5M-FY21-22.

More intriguingly, Pak Suzuki Swift sold only 1,828 cars in FY2019-20, averaging only 152 units per month. This was prior to the company’s official statement (in August 2020) that the aged hatchback will be phased out. Sonata, on the other hand, currently sells 215 copies per month on average, which is 41% more than Swift. Although there is no direct comparison between the two vehicles, it does demonstrate that the Sonata, despite being three times the price of the Suzuki Swift, is doing exceptionally well in terms of sales.

Although the Sonata is a costly product, priced at PKR 64.99 lac for the base 2.0L and PKR 72.99 lac for the flagship 2.5L variant, it is significantly less expensive than its competitors, the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord, both of which are available as CBUs and priced at PKR 186 lac and PKR 119 lac respectively, and both of which have been gracing Pakistani showroom floors for a long time due to unrealistic pricing.

Sonata is also the first locally built Hyundai passenger car in Pakistan that follows the company’s worldwide model. The Tucson crossover SUV and the Elantra sedan, both of which were debuted earlier this year, are older generation vehicles that have been replaced by current generation versions in international markets.

The Sonata mid-sized car is doing well for Hyundai-Nishat in a pricing range that is usually reserved for high-end crossover SUVs. And its success could pave the way for other automakers to enter our market with premium mid-size sedans.
